Are you serious? A blog post about Microsoft, and Open Source! Yes, we have been playing well with others for a couple of years now, and I think it would be nice to let you know about some resources for you.

This is site is the main place about everything related to the openness of Microsoft. It’s not just about Open Source, it’s also about Open Data, and interoperability. You can also join the conversation on Twitter by following @OpenAtMicrosoft, or give a closer look at the Port25 blog.
Windows Azure GitHub repository – https://github.com/WindowsAzure
One of my preferred move we did for OSS lately is around Windows Azure. We release the sources for the different SDKs so you can freely download, or fork the code. This is also something good for the GitHub fan in me.
CodePlex – http://www.codeplex.com/
CodePlex is a repository for Open Source project mostly around Microsoft technology. It’s a combination of Microsoft one, with a lot of 3rd party projects from developers all over the world. A great place to find an application to use, to contribute to, or to learn with some real world project.
PhoneGap – http://phonegap.com/
Are you a mobile developer? If the answer is yes, you’ll love PhoneGap. This Open Source framework gives you the opportunity to use your actual HTML5 skills to build a mobile application by targeting 7 platforms like iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. This is not a Microsoft project, but we worked closely with the team to help having the Windows Phone support.
Entity Framework – http://entityframework.codeplex.com/
Entity Framework is a recommended data access technology for a new application that we made open. You can now go to the CodePlex repository to download, and play with the sources.
Interoperability Bridges – http://www.interoperabilitybridges.com/
Interoperability Bridges is not just about Open Source, as it’s about everything related to interoperability: Microsoft technology working with a non-Microsoft one. For me, it’s one of the most interesting websites as you can see a lot of the projects we did to be part of, or support Open Source.
Windows Azure – http://www.windowsazure.com
I know, I have already talked about the Windows Azure SDK on GitHub, but what about Windows Azure itself? We basically have three amazing offers to support Open Source:
- Web sites: a free offer that lets you easily deploy websites with Open Source applications like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and more.
- Virtual Machine: you can now deploy your own virtual machine with the OS you want. You can also use our pre-defined image to install, as an example, a version of Ubuntu!
- Build Cloud services with Node.js, Java, PHP, Python, and more…
There are a lot more resources for you, but those are my favorites.
